The following book is comprised of a series of essays and reviews that have been produced over the past several years, all related, in one way or the other, to the New Perspective on Paul (NPP). This "defense" of the NPP takes the form of a combination of exegesis and extended book reviews. In endeavoring to "defend" the NPP, the eight chapters of this book contain a common thread, namely, that the movement generically bearing this moniker is not inimical to most historical/traditional systems of soteriology. Yet because of the rather volatile reaction of many, the volume seeks to redress the balance in favor of a more tempered approach to a highly controversial topic.

Is the New Testament inherently violent? In this book a well-regarded New Testament scholar offers a balanced critical assessment of charges and claims that the Christian scriptures encode, instigate, or justify violence. Thomas Yoder Neufeld provides a useful introduction to the language of violence in current theological discourse and surveys a wide range of key ethical New Testament texts through the lens of violence/nonviolence. He makes the case that, contrary to much scholarly opinion, the New Testament is not in itself inherently violent or supportive of violence; instead, it rejects and overcomes violence. In this volume Mikeal C. Parsons provides an overview of Luke and Acts, reading Luke and Acts in the context of ancient rhetorical criticism as practiced in the Hellenistic world. Parsons first compares Luke's storytelling with narrative techniques of ancient rhetoric. He next compares Luke's interpretation of Jewish sources within the social conventions of Luke's day. Finally, Parsons profiles Luke's specific evangelistic theological artistry, one in which Luke creatively uses Isaiah to call for the conversion of the Gentiles. The depth and breadth of Parson's chapters root Luke's narrative strategy, interpretive moves, and theological imagination in the pagan, Jewish, and Christian contexts of the period.

Problems of Old Testament Theology in the Twentieth Century

Problems of Old Testament Theology in the Twentieth Century
    $35.00
As its title indicates, this volume is an extended bibliographical essay concerning the major questions arising from attempts to present an Old Testament theology in the twentieth century. It begins with a brief look at earlier nineteenth-century attempts to write a distinctive Old Testament theology on the basis of an historical-critical approach to the Old Testament. It then proceeds to note the great change that emerged after the First World War and the revitalizing of interest in the subject, partly by way of a response to the ideological struggle over the Old Testament. Two major issues dominated scholarly approaches; the first concerned the conflicting, and ultimately unresolved attempt to find a basis for presenting a systematic approach to the religious ideas of the Old Testament. The second major issue, epitomized in the work of G. von Rad, has been the attempt to use history as the primary category and to set out a theology on the basis of a history of salvation. Professor Reventlow is not concerned to establish any final resolution of these major problems, though a number of criticisms of their strength and weaknesses are noted. Altogether this is a quite indispensable guide for anyone concerned with the question of Old Testament theology' (R. E. Clements, reviewing the original German edition in Society for Old Testament Studies Book List).
