Foreword by Phyllis Tickle

A fresh, readable introduction to Christian spirituality, God Seekers brings to life thirty-three spiritual masters from throughout Christian history. Through capsule biographies, selected quotations, and questions for reflection, Richard Schmidt presents and explores diverse ways of relating to God. Each chapter personalizes a major stream or movement of Christian spirituality by focusing on a particular key figure.

-While God Seekers may be read with delight or for information . . . it is impossible to engage it for long without being seized as well by the grandeur of the panorama it lays out before us. Here, in living people, in living saints, is the history of the church, the body of Christ as we and our kind have shaped it and are shaping it.-

The working of God in all parts of our lives, in small things as well as great, we call 'providence'. These special workings of his providence are not mere accidents. From the day of our birth, to the day of our death, God is working for the good of those who have been called according to his purpose.

In this simplified and abridged form of his 1677 classic work entitled Divine conduct or The Mystery of Providence John Flavel addresses how God works providentially in our lives, as well as why and how we should think deeply about these providences. An encouragement to Christians to taste and see the good God has done in our own lives.

GOTTSCHALK & A MEDIEVAL PREDESTINATION

GOTTSCHALK & A MEDIEVAL PREDESTINATION
$29.00
The question of predestination and its nature, which drew strong protests from the monks of Provence in the early fifth century against the teaching of Augustine of Hippo, was initially settled by the Council of Orange in 529. But in the Carolingian renaissance in the ninth century, the Benedictine monk, Gottschalk of Orbais, brought the teachings of the late Augustine to the forefront of theological debate and greatly disturbed the clergy and faithful with his doctrine of double predestination of some to the joy of heaven and of others to the eternal punishment of hell -- a doctrine that he claimed was that of Augustine and the Catholic faith. The present volume provides for the first time an English translation of Gottschalk's key writings on predestination and various reactions and comments from leading theologians of the ninth century, as well as a learned introduction to Gottschalk's life and controversies. - Publisher.

The fact that some who profess to be Christians fall away from the faith has always been an obstacle to God's people, but we are told in the Bible that those who God has called are saved forever. How then are we to understand the saints' perseverance in the Christian life? How are we to view our lives in the light of God's everlasting covenant and Christ's completed work of salvation? What is our motivation to finish the race?

John Owen's work The Doctrine of the Saints' Perseverance Explained and Confirmed was originally published in 1654 and this easier-to-read abridgement is still relevant to Christians today.

Although a considerable number of scattered records accompanied what Jonathan Edwards called the 'Revival of Religion in New England in 1740' it was not until 1841 that Joseph Tracy thoroughly sifted these original sources and became its first historian. He aimed to provide 'a work which should furnish the means of suitably appreciating both the good and the evil of that period of religious history.' 'His design,' as C. H. Maxson has written, 'was admirably executed.'

This volume remains second to none in its definitive treatment of one of the most important and remarkable eras in the history of the Christian church in modern times.

Despite his other achievements, Owen is best famed for his writings. These cover the range of doctrinal, ecclesiastical and practical subjects. They are characterized by profundity, thoroughness and, consequestly, authority. Andrew Thomson said that Owen 'makes you feel when he has reached the end of his subject, that he has also exhausted it.' Although many of his works were called forth by the particular needs of his own day they all have a uniform quality of timelessness. Owen's works were republished in full in the nineteenth century. Owen is surely the Prince of the Puritans. 'To master his works', says Spurgeon, 'is to be a profound theologian.'

So many concerns of today's world require nuanced consideration and a sensitive response. Yet human nature and spiritual need remain remarkably constant. Practical, moral, and spiritual struggles are not peculiar to modern life.

Early Christians looked at all things through the lens of God and Christ, including those that today we would consider secular in nature, as the wide range of subjects these writers addressed clearly demonstrates. The words of Christian writers such as Tertullian, Jerome, John Chrysostom, Basil of Caesarea, and Clement of Alexandria are organized around familiar, everyday themes. In study, reflection, or devotional reading, use this book to look through their eyes at our issues -- and, perhaps, find a deepened and sharpened awareness of what it means to choose the Christian life.

Introduced, organized, and translated by Everett Ferguson, these quotes are arranged to allow the ancient authors to speak for themselves. Inheriting Wisdom will refresh modern readers with the rich resources of early Christianity and provide direction and guidance for the twenty-first century.

Karl Barth (1886-1968) has been called the most important Protestant theologian since Schleiermacher. A lifetime of work produced a huge and complex body of writings that emerged from both his theological teaching and from his engagement in church life. This book draws together these readings to provide a clear and authoritative introduction to the main themes in Barth's theology. In an accessible way, it shows the continuity and coherence of Barth's work and stresses the importance of his biblical and ethical writings alongside his systematic theology. The book focuses on Barth's response to modernity, postmodernity and the tasks of theology, presenting him as an outstanding resource for constructive theology in our age.
