Origen On First Principles Readers Edition

Origen On First Principles Readers Edition
$36.95
On First Principles by Origen of Alexandria, written around 220-230 AD, is one of the most important and contentious works of early Christianity. It provoked controversy when written, provoked further debate when translated into Latin by Rufinus in the fourth century, and was the subject,
together with its author, of condemnation in the sixth century. As a result, the work no longer survives intact in the original Greek. We only have the complete work in the Latin translation of Rufinus, and a few extensive passages preserved in Greek by being excerpted into the Philokalia of Basil
of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus.

John Behr offers a translation of one of the most important texts from early Christianity. He includes an invaluable introduction, which provides a clear structure of the work with significant implications for how the text is to be read and for understanding the character of theology in the early
Christian tradition.

The Pelagian controversy has secured an enduring place for Pelagius in the history of Western Christian thought. Few of Pelagius' writings, however, have been preserved, and until recently none was available in English translation. This volume presents Pelagius' commentary on Romans for the
first time in English. The commentary, one of thirteen on the Pauline epistles, dates from the time when Pelagius was active in Rome, before he became embroiled in controversy, but already there are adumbrations of the later debate and signs of different currents of thought in Italy and beyond. In
his introduction Theodore de Bruyn discusses the context in which Pelagius wrote the commentary and the issues which shaped his interpretation of Romans. He also takes up questions about the edition of the commentary. The translation is annotated with references to Pelagius' contemporaries, and a
new recension of Pelagius' text of Romans is presented in an appendix.

John Calvin's The Institutes of the Christian Religion presents one of the most winsome, thought-provoking, spiritually inspiring, and heart-searching summations of Christian truth ever written. Although works exist that either offer an analysis of Calvin's views or serve as a guide to his Institutes, none fully share the aim of J. Mark Beach's Piety's Wisdom. Keeping to the form, shape, and tenor of Calvin's own work, Piety's Wisdom offers busy pastors, seminarians, interested college students, and motivated laypersons a book that presents Calvin on his own terms. This summary can be used as an introduction to the Christian faith, as a primer for the study of Calvin, or a combination of each. While the book is suitable for individual study, the inclusion of study questions makes it an ideal tool for facilitating discussion in adult study groups.

Scripture is quite clear that "faith without works is dead." But faith, accompanied by works, is such an ornament and testimony to faith that, according to Paul, "adorns the doctrine of God in all things" (Titus 2:10). It is this text of Scripture that Vincent Alsop, a Puritan pastor, exposits in this treatise. We are not to alter the doctrines of God; we will never improve upon them, but we may and do adorn them with our holy lives and godly conduct. That is practical godliness! Says Alsop: "The harmony of the Christian religion has been disordered, its beauty blemished, and much filth thrown in its face . . . by the unsuitable professions of those who profess it. In short, it has been wounded in the house of its friends."Appendixed is a rare sermon by Alsop entitled "The Sinfulness of Strange Apparel, a biblical theology of fashion, which is so relevant to our culture.
