Christians in the West have many questions about the identity of Islam and Muslim societies. Due in part to misleading media reports and a lack of interreligious dialogue, a majority of Western Christians view Islam as more prone to violence. The perplexity is compounded by news of violent conflicts involving Muslim communities in various parts of the world. Discussions about Muslims in the media often give the impression that Islam is a single, uniform entity. The reality is that global Islam is a complex and diverse phenomenon, not a monolithic one. Unfortunately, what makes the headlines often shapes Christian mission strategies that are overshadowed, if not controlled, by such reports. The challenge for understanding Islam is further complicated by the fact that an already very diverse Islam across the world stage is fluid and dynamic, with changes motivated as much by Islamic agency from within as by forces impinging "from without." Dynamics of Muslim Worlds brings together leading missiologists, theologians, and historians from the 2016 Missiology Lectures at Fuller Theological Seminary's School of Intercultural Studies to present a nuanced account of contemporary Muslim societies. Edited by Evelyne A. Reisacher, the contributions to this Missiological Engagements volume explore the changing dynamics of Islam today and how current religious and social climates shape Christian engagement with Muslims. This is a fresh look at a topic of increasing importance in our present global context.

EVANGELIZING THE CHOSEN PEOPLE

With this book, Yaakov Ariel offers the first comprehensive history of Protestant evangelization of Jews in America to the present day. Based on unprecedented research in missionary archives as well as Jewish writings, the book analyzes the theology and activities of both the missions and the converts and describes the reactions of the Jewish community, which in turn helped to shape the evangelical activity directed toward it.

Ariel delineates three successive waves of evangelism, the first directed toward poor Jewish immigrants, the second toward American-born Jews trying to assimilate, and the third toward Jewish baby boomers influenced by the counterculture of the Vietnam War era. After World War II, the missionary impulse became almost exclusively the realm of conservative evangelicals, as the more liberal segments of American Christianity took the path of interfaith dialogue.

As Ariel shows, these missionary efforts have profoundly influenced Christian-Jewish relations. Jews have seen the missionary movement as a continuation of attempts to delegitimize Judaism and to do away with Jews through assimilation or annihilation. But to conservative evangelical Christians, who support the State of Israel, evangelizing Jews is a manifestation of goodwill toward them.

Michael Talaga grew up as Catholic as they come. A product of parochial school, he was well versed in the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church and was careful to obey them. He was a Catholic's Catholic. But then he met Jesus face to face. The screen between the confessor and the Priest was removed, and Michael's life changed forever. The God I Thought I Knew is the book you've been waiting for. Without being offensive, it clearly delineates the differences between Catholic doctrine and having a relationship with Jesus Christ, and does so from the point of a man who once was a devoted Catholic and now has a passion for his people.Whether you're taking a walk back through your own Catholic childhood or gaining a new understanding of the lives of the Catholics you know, you are sure to find the stories and insights of Michael Talaga amusing and challenging. Without haughtiness or pretense, he will help you to see where the Catholic doctrine differs from the Word of God and explain why his choice to follow Jesus meant a break from the only church he had ever known.

In this book contemporary Judaism is presented in all its rich diversity, including both traditional and modern theologies as well as secular forms of Jewish identity. While the focus of the book is on developments that have taken place in the past two hundred years, they are set against a historical background, going back to the Bible. Beginning with a description of the Jewish people as it exists in today's world, it studies the unique concept of Jewish peoplehood and its survival over the centuries in the face of many challenges. An account of the key texts is followed by studies of the different interpretations of the religion, and the ways that life is lived out both in the home and in the community. Jewish theology is described both historically and in terms of contemporary issues. An important and distinctive section considers the goals of Jewish life and faith.

    Love your Muslim neighbors.

Motivated by a deep-rooted conviction that the North American church needs to be equipped for this important task, Micah Fries and Keith Whitfield have gathered a group of experts who are deeply invested in successful outreach to their Muslim neighbors. Unlike many resources that explore the topic of Islam as a dominant religion in the Middle East, Islam and North America focuses on the presence of Islam here in North America. Answering questions about the commonalities between Christians and Muslims, freedom of worship, the Quran, and Sharia law, this book will equip North American Christians to think about Islam theologically and missionally, engage their Muslim neighbors hospitably, and encourage readers to find new opportunities for missional engagement in their own backyards.

Updated in a new edition, this timely study encompasses the history of an important worldwide religion, starting with its seventh-century Arabian prophet, Muhammad, and going on to describe Islam as it exists today. In this new edition, the author provides detailed information on the present day's most militant sects and their power centers in countries that include Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, and Indonesia, among others. He also offers a post-September 11th analysis of motivations that inspire some extremist Islamic factions to commit terrorist acts, describes the policies and acts of Western nations that have contributed to antagonism, and describes strategies being developed by the United States and its allies toward the Islamic world in general and terrorism in particular. The author explains the Qur'an, Islam's Holy Scripture, and describes Islamic theology, pointing out its many connections with Judaism and Christianity. He describes the core of Islamic beliefs and obligations as they apply to each believer, and discusses the religion's several most important sects. Islam's history is broken down according to the countries where it exists as a major political and social force. The text is supplemented with endnotes, a comprehensive glossary, a bibliography, and an index.

"Moishe Rosen's career as a missionary to the Jewish people and mentor to many has been characterized as cutting edge, creative, controversial, and consequential . . . . His vision for Jewish missions has always been larger than just the organization he founded. Moishe Rosen is an innovator of methods and strategies in Jewish evangelism and an appreciator and empowerer whose gifts have been used to lift the Lord high." -From the Tribute by Susan Perlman In tribute to this influential leader, Jews and the Gospel at the End of History combines the insights of world-class theologians, exegetes, and historians to address Jewish, Messianic Jewish, and Christian issues, from evangelism to ethics to eschatology. Part 1 begins with a study of the biblical emphasis on Jewish evangelism in the Bible, looking at God's concern and love for his people. Part 2 illuminates the historical, philosophical and scriptural interplay between ethics, missions, and biblical law. Part 3 unfolds the plan of God, the end times, and the Second Advent. The trajectory of this book moves from instruction to hope-both enlightening and inspiring those in ministry to Jewish people and serving as a fitting tribute to Moishe Rosen, founder of Jews for Jesus.
