What does worship look like? Is there just one truly right way to worship? Are there any wrong ways? To what extent should our unity as believers manifest itself in unified public worship? Sadly, disagreement over how we should worship our loving God has sparked some most unloving attitudes among Christians. Exploring the Worship Spectrum seeks to correct this. It provides a forum for presentation, critique, and defense of six prominent worship styles: -Formal-Liturgical - Paul Zahl -Traditional Hymn-Based - Harold Best -Contemporary Music-Driven - Joe Horness -Charismatic - Don Williams -Blended - Robert Webber -Emerging - Sally Morgenthaler This unique format allows those with a heart for worship to compare different perspectives and draw their own conclusions on what the Bible teaches. It engages the reader's faculties of critical thinking in a way that allows him or her to understand the various approaches to worship, carefully evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, and make personal choices without adopting a judgmental spirit. The Counterpoints series provides a forum for comparison and critique of different views on issues important to Christians. Counterpoints books address three categories: Church Life, Exploring Theology, and Engaging Culture. Complete your library with other books in the Counterpoints series.

Worship is crucial to the Christian life. Yet fewer and fewer people are in our buildings worshiping. Why? Perhaps we aren't meeting their needs, aren't speaking their language, and, therefore, aren't relevant or meaningful. In trying to respond to the needs of the community, "worship wars" sometimes erupt, and rarely does anyone win. Styles are only tactics, says Jeff Patton, and, apart from a sense of God's transformational presence, empty at best.

Transformational worship occurs when worship is indigenous, speaking to the whole person in a particular culture at a specific time regardless of style. Patton describes four aspects of life (the Holy, the void, the lived world, and the self) and sees in these four aspects a "divine intersection" where the Holy invades our reality and brings us to a deeper, transformational experience of God's love, presence, and purpose.

Churches all over North America are starting contemporary worship services or incorporating elements of contemporary worship in more traditional services. While many books have discussed why contemporary worship is necessary to reaching the unchurched, too few have provided solid, practical help for planning and executing this new style of worship.

In Handbook for Multi-Sensory Worship, the worship team of Ginghamsburg Church--recognized as one of the most innovative congregations today in worship planning and development--offers just this kind of nuts-and-bolts guidance on how to prepare for and execute worship in a contemporary key. Included in the handbook are worship themes that are geared to felt needs in the congregation. This book explains how to choose appropriate themes, build a service around them, and identify lections that build on these themes. Congregations will learn how to identify and address the felt needs of the pre-Christian audience in the congregation.

Worship aids are thematically based:
- music--which songs to use and where to get the music and permission to use it
- video clips--what to use, where and how to get them, and how to get permission to use them
- graphics and images--where to find images that support sermons
- dramas--the book includes sources of dramas and examples that can be used by congregations and guidance on how to draw people into drama and train them to participate in worship in this way
- contemporary calls to worship, prayers, offertory prayers, and sentences

The handbook contains 30 complete contemporary worship services and detailed how-to instructions. The CD contains a large number of projection images linked to the text of the handbook, and to the Internet, for use in worship services.

Do we think about worship?

In the 'emerging' generation 'worship' is something to do with style, rather than substance. A matter of live-and-let-live choice.

But pure worship is declaring with our words and lives that God is more important to us than anything else - that he is our deepest desire and that he is worth more than anything else we hold dear. God alone is worthy of worship because he alone is righteous.

Louie Giglio points out that worship is simply about value. Our worship is a response to what we value most. If we consider that a person, a thing, or an experience is what matters most then we are willing to sacrifice in order to get it. Worship is coming before the 'throne' of what is of ultimate value to us.

In the Old Testament the priests would build an altar on which to offer the sacrifices to the One whom they worshipped. In order to find your altar of worship just follow the trail of how you use your time, energy, money and affections. The more time you spend before that throne, the more your life will reflect what or whom you worship.

It is time to re-engineer what we value most so that worship is something that truly honors God. Some values we hold dear will have to be cast aside, some new ideas adopted, still others will need to be strengthened.

Liturgy of Creation Understanding Calendars in Old Testament Context

Holidays today are often established by legislation, and calendars are published on paper and smart phones. But how were holidays chosen and taught in biblical Israel? And what might these holidays have to do with the creation narrative? In this book, Michael LeFebvre considers the calendars of the Pentateuch with their basis in the heavenly lights and the land's agricultural cadences. He argues that dates were added to Old Testament narratives not as journalistic details but to teach sacred rhythms of labor and worship. LeFebvre then applies this insight to the creation week, finding that the days of creation also serve a liturgical purpose and not a scientific one. The Liturgy of Creation restores emphasis on the religious function of the creation week as a guide for Sabbath worship. Scholars, students, and church members alike will appreciate LeFebvre's careful scholarship and pastoral sensibilities.

"The opening section of "Music and the Arts in Christian Worship" offers an overview of the current worship practices of most of the major denominations in this country, each prepared by a person active in that particular church. Read individually, they furnish a wealth of fresh ideas; collectively, they give evidence that, while each denomination remains theologically focused on its tradition and centers its worship on the familiar, there is hardly one which is not actively re-examining its worship philosophy and experimenting with new forms, music, and visual art. Style is becoming more and more eclectic, and there is a healthy regard for the special contribution that every individual may make. Worship, once almost the property of the officiating clergyman rigorously hewing to a prescribed pattern, has rightly become the responsibility of every person."
