At the end of the twentieth century the forces of race, gender, ethnicity, culture, social status, life-style and sexual preference threaten to disassemble any notion of universal "human nature" or "human condition." In light of this historical moment, the Christian doctrine of human nature is ripe for rethinking and reformulation. Charles Sherlock sees this theological task as demanding a "double focus." To reflect on the subject of human nature, he says, is like "moving around the different areas of an ellipse with two focal points" humans as made in the image of God and the particular realities of human existence. Both must be brought into sharper, more detailed focus in our quest to understand human nature. The result of Sherlock's "double focus" is The Doctrine of Humanity. Sherlock notably engages the communal dimension of humanity in its social, creational and cultural aspects before examining the human person as individual, as male and female, and as whole being. He offers a timely and engaging look at what it means to be human on the continuum between our creation in the divine image and our recreation in the image of Christ.

  • Merit Award, 2007 Christianity Today Theology/Ethics Book
  • With every earthquake and war, understanding the nature of evil and our response to it becomes more urgent. Evil is no longer the concern just of ministers and theologians but also of politicians and the media. We hear of child abuse, ethnic cleansing, AIDS, torture and terrorism, and rightfully we are shocked. But, N. T. Wright says, we should not be surprised. For too long we have naively believed in the modern idea of human progress. In contrast, postmodern thinkers have rightly argued that evil is real, powerful and important, but they give no real clue as to what we should do about it. In fact, evil is more serious than either our culture or our theology has supposed. How then might Jesus' death be the culmination of the Old Testament solution to evil but on a wider and deeper scale than most imagine? Can we possibly envision a world in which we are delivered from evil? How might we work toward such a future through prayer and justice in the present? These are the powerful and pressing themes that N. T. Wright addresses in this book that is at once timely and timeless.

A new analysis of human nature and behavior in biblical perspective by two evangelical experts. This comprehensive textbook discusses four key aspects of the human person by exploring the relationship between origin and destiny, substance and identity, function and behavior, and relationships and community. The authors argue that an integrated approach of theology and psychology not only enhances our understanding of what it means to be human, but is also key to that understanding.

In the struggle between the sexes, Ronald and Beverly Allen are peacemakers. With feminists they feel fully the past and present pain, the yearning for new freedom and fulfillment. But they also trust the Bible-the source for all that is oldest and best in male-female traditions. To open your mind to what really matters in the women's movement, the Allens take you everywhere: to the incomparable events in Eden and to Paul's perplexing directives in the New Testament; to Betty Friedan in the sixties and a different Betty Friedan in the eighties; to Sarah and Steinem, to Deborah and deBeauvoir, to Proverbs 31 and Archie Bunker. The result is a call to balance, to help you rise from the ruts of injustice and insensitivity, and yet stay in the safe confines of God's design.

For two thousand years, Christians have been intrigued by the somewhat enigmatic Imago Dei references in the book of Genesis. Much theological ink has been spilled mulling over the significance and meaning of these words: "Let us make humanity in our image, according to our likeness . . . "

In The Liberating Image, J. Richard Middleton takes on anew the challenge of interpreting the Imago Dei. Reflecting on the potential of the Imago Dei texts for developing an ethics of power rooted in compassion, he relates its significance to the Christian community's distinct calling in an increasingly violent world.

The Liberating Image introduces a relevant, scholarly take on an important Christian doctrine. It will appeal to all Christians seeking to better understand what it means to be made in God's image.

We live in a world shot through with evil. The twentieth century has witnessed suffering and human cruelty on a scale never before imagined. Yet, paradoxically, in recent years the doctrine of original sin has suffered neglect and ridicule. In this philosophically sophisticated treatment of the biblical evidence for original sin, Henri Blocher offers a robust response. Interacting with the best theological thinking on the subject, this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume shows that while the nature of original sin is a mystery--even a riddle--only belief in it makes sense of evil and wrongdoing. After a general survey of the biblical evidence, Blocher moves on to discuss the two key texts. First, he considers the relation of the Eden story of Genesis 2 and 3 to modern scientific, literary and theological thinking. Then, he offers a new and groundbreaking interpretation of Romans 5, where Paul discusses Christ and Adam. From this exegetical foundation, he goes on to show how the doctrine of original sin makes sense of the paradoxes of human existence. In the final chapter, he discusses the intellectual difficulties that some feel remain with the doctrine itself. Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead

""How can we oppose evil without creating new evils and being made evil ourselves?"" --Walter Wink What we think and don't think about evil is important. Nigel Wright provides us with a thorough biblical and theological study of the nature of evil, Christ's victory over it, and our participation in that victory as we await its consummation. In this revision and updating of the Fair Face of Evil: Putting the Power of Darkness in Its Place, Wright sorts through the options to develop a thoroughly Christian understanding of the danger of the enemies of both God and humanity. Getting our thinking right will help us get our ways of living and acting right as well. ""This marvelous book by Nigel Wright puts the devil in his place by stripping him of his unwarranted personhood and exaggerated power. Nigel does not in any way play down the reality of evil, but he does show that those who have a tendency to see demons under every bed are more likely to be guilty of a paranoia in which the spirits are imaginative creations from inside their heads."" --Andrew Walker Canon Professor of Theology, Religion, and Culture, Kings College (London) Nigel Goring Wright is a native of Manchester, England. He has been a Baptist minister since 1973, initially at Ansdell Baptist Church and more recently at Altrincham Baptist Church, both in northern England. He spent the years 1987 through 1995 as a tutor in Christian doctrine at Spurgeon's College, London.
