Faith and Rationality investigates the rich implications of what the authors call Calvinistic or Reformed epistemology. This is the view of knowledge-enunciated by Calvin, further developed by Barth-that sees belief in God as its own foundation; in the authors' terms, is it properly basic in itself.--Nous

This long-awaited text charts clearly and comprehensively the enormously important area of feminist theory -- and brings it into fruitful conversation with Christian theology. Jones introduces the primary concerns that animate feminist theory through discussion of critical texts and through women's narratives. She shows how they pose uncomfortable questions, and leave no corner of the Christian tradition unchallenged. Jones unfolds feminist theory in three broad categories that analyze human identity and gender, oppression, and ethics. She then illustrates their potential for illuminating theological categories of experience, truth, text, and norm to revitalize three key traditional Christian doctrines: faith, sin, and church.

"In The Fidelity of Betrayal, Peter Rollins has teased out--as Bonhoeffer never had the chance to do--profound possibilities hidden in the phrase. As a huge fan of Peter's first book, I find his second no less thoughtful, stimulating, and at times unsettling--always in a most (de)constructive way. His subversive parables, his clever turns of phrase, and his beguiling clarity all conspire to tempt the reader into that most fertile and terrifying of activities--to think to the very rim of one's understanding, and then to faithfully imagine the Truth that lies far beyond." --Brian McLaren, author/activist (www.brianmclaren.net)

What if one of the core demands of a radical Christianity lay in a call for its betrayal, while the ultimate act of affirming God required the forsaking of God? And what if fidelity to the Judeo-Christian Scriptures demanded their renunciation? In short, what would it mean if the only way of finding real faith involved betraying it with a kiss?

Employing the insights of mysticism and deconstructive theory, The Fidelity of Betrayal delves into the subversive and revolutionary nature of a Christianity that dwells within the church while simultaneously undermining it.

Few topics can grab headlines and stir passions quite like politics, especially when the church is involved. Considering the attention that many Christian parachurch groups, churches, and individual believers give to politics--and of the varying and sometimes divergent political ideals and aims among them--Five Views on the Church and Politics provides a helpful breakdown of the possible Christian approaches. Readers will find themselves equipped to think more deeply about the relationship between church and state in a way that goes beyond mere policy debates and current campaigns.

General Editor Amy Black brings together five top-notch political theologians in the book, each representing one of the five key political traditions within Christianity:

Anabaptist (Separationist)--Thomas Heilke

Lutheran (Two Kingdom)--Robert Benne

Catholic (In Tension)--J. Brian Benestad

Reformed (Integrationist)--James K. A. Smith

Black Church (Prophetic)--Bruce Fields

Each author addresses his tradition's theological distinctives, the role of government, the place of individual Christian participation in government and politics, and how churches should (or should not) address political questions. Responses by each contributor to opposing views will highlight key areas of difference and disagreement.

Thorough and even-handed, Five Views on the Church and Politics will enable readers to consider the strengths and weaknesses of the most significant Christian views on political engagement and to draw their own, informed conclusions.

Is God in the business of entertainment, matchmaking, time management, blood sacrifice, or medicine? If you listen to some messages both inside and outside the church today, you might think so. But in "God Does Not . . .," several theologians challenge these and other widespread misconceptions of how God works in the world.
A follow-up to the popular "God Is Not . . .," this book is both accessible and provocative. In the end, we are left not with a negation of what God does, but an affirmation of a God who does all things well and often far exceeds what our human imaginations can fathom.

HOPE & A FUTURE

The coming Reformation in America in these early years of the 21st century is being led not by the leaders of many of the Protestant mainline denominations but, rather, by independent groups and their allies around the world who are calling for the affirmation of traditional, orthodox Christianity in a pluralistic society heavily influenced by secular culture. Within their own denominations, those calling for such an affirmation have become exiles, strangers and aliens. Speaking for many such people in the Protestant mainline, Episcopal Bishop Robert W. Duncan, Jr. says, We have been taken captive, against our will, to a place we did not wish to go. In response, these independent groups and their allies around the world are speaking the one truth of Jesus Christ plainly and with the authority of Scripture to a society that, in many ways, has lost its bearings and is searching for the solace that only is possible in the Word, incarnate and written. That message, as voiced by Duncan, is the coming Reformation in America: Choosing Jesus first: Jesus above culture, Jesus above comfort, Jesus above property, Jesus above family and friends, Jesus above any other security, Jesus above a wayward North American Church.

HOPE IN THE THOUGHT OF JACQUES ELLUL

HOPE IN THE THOUGHT OF JACQUES ELLUL

Description: "Hope expresses more than an area of concentration in Ellul's thought; it is the central idea that binds his disparate elements together. Ellul believed that at this moment of history, the world since 1945, hope must preoccupy our thinking and lives. "To understand hope we must first comprehend its absence. This entails discerning what causes the absence of hope, namely the world's embrace of technique and the abandonment of God. Ellul also rejected these as a positive affirmation. He wanted to make a firm distinction between reality and truth. He affirmed modern abandonment as a realistic fact, as an accurate analysis of the present condition, not as an affirmation of the truth. Hope is truth in Jesus Christ, but truth must be asserted against these harsh facts. He used facts to incite hope in believers, to shake their complacency and to realize their actual condition in the world . . . . The idea of hope in the thought of Jacques Ellul can only be properly understood in light of dialectic struggle between negatives, which amount to factual representations of the modern world, and positives, through which hope exerts itself in the face of these facts. From this tension will issue personal resolve. Technique has brought the world to great collective heights and achievements, but this has come at the expense of personal ends and meaning. Ellul attempted to bridge this gap by asserting individual meaning against the aggregated progress of technique without destroying the gains made by collective advance. This represents the central dilemma in Ellul's thought--how does one maintain meaning and personal aims in a world founded on corporate necessity?" --from the Introduction About the Contributor(s): Lawrence J. Terlizzese is Adjunct Professor of Systematic Theology at Dallas Theological Seminary. He has also taught Comparative Religion and Philosophy of Religion at Texas Woman's University.

I WILL BE YOUR GOD

Like many of us, T. M. Moore once viewed the Bible as little more than a handbook on conversion and moral living. Then he came to see the larger view set forth in the biblical teaching on God's covenant. Moore writes, I began to see that all of life is there for taking and remaking--a richer devotional life, sustained growth in the Lord, renewed and more loving relationships, meaningful work and leisure, and the calling to transform every institution, all of culture and society, according to the wisdom and grace of God. I had never heard the Christian faith explained in such cosm and powerful terms. I was stunned. Where had I been? Why was my own experience of Christ so shallow and self-centered?...All at once, as if in a moment, I experienced a stretching of my mind, a reenergizing of my soul, and a kindling of fervor in my heart such as I had never known before. I Will Be Your God is dedicated to encouraging such an outlook on life by promoting a better understanding of the nature, meaning, and implications of living in God's covenant
