"Many good individual volumes have been written about the Christ of Scripture, His church, His cross, and His crown. Most of these, however, deal with the themes of this book in isolation from each other. In this book, I have set forth not only the major Biblical teaching on each of the themes but also the vital importance of seeing how the truths of Christ, His church, His cross, and His crown relate to each other. I have tried to show the connections between the four and how each is dependent upon the others. It is my desire that the readers will see how what one believes about any one of these marvelous biblical truths affects and reflects what one believes about each of the others. I have written with the firm conviction that it is impossible to consistently view the teaching of Scripture while viewing any one of these four in isolation from any one of the other three. This is because in Scripture they complement each other. They build on each other and need to be viewed as interrelated essential aspects of the sovereign purpose of God." -Dr. Lightner, from the foreword.

Dr. Robert P. Lightner's final work is a masterful study of the person and work of Christ, including the crucifixion, the church of which He is head, and the future Kingdom over which He will reign. The book shows the decades of study and consideration this esteemed professor, pastor, and thinker has given to these fundamental areas of theology.

For many of us, the whole concept of Christology is as mystifying as a foreign language, yet Christians down the ages have fought to defend the person and work of Christ - seeing him and what he did quite rightly as a vital element of how we are saved. If we are to understand this subject we need to know the person of Christ; not just what he did (his work) but who he is (his person). Through this book we get to know the Son of God who indeed is God and not just a superman! He is the one who came from above and became fully human having a human body and soul. Being God enabled him to pay the debt owed for sin and being man enabled him to stand on man's behalf for their sin. In straightforward and simple layman terms this book will explain the interconnectivity of the work and person of Jesus Christ and dispel any misconceptions you may have.

Justification is not a relic of the past - it has direct relevance to us as Christians today. We often struggle with the thought of justification because of human pride; "I can't be that bad" and so justification is often undermined, wrongly presented or just plain ignored. Scripture though, is brutally clear: we have a real problem - the prospect of our lives marred by wrong-doing being laid out before an almighty God who is pure and will not forever let wrong go unpunished. We can't earn our way out of our predicament - as this is just "rubbish" according to the apostle Paul. We need something else, someone who can take the hit we so richly deserve - leaving us to be declared innocent instead.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is intimately bound up with the glory of Christ Himself. Moreover, all of the major themes of Christian theology are vitally informed by the person and work of our glorious Lord. Aware of these connections, Ryan McGraw gives us a big-picture view of the gospel that begins with the eternal plan of salvation, moves through the covenants of works and of grace, traces every stage of Christ's incarnation and work, and concludes with His reign in the church. Throughout the book, careful attention is given to the importance of the Trinitarian nature of God and the believer's union with Christ. Here is a call to faith in and fellowship with Jesus, demonstrating how the glory of Christ is truly the best news anyone can embrace.

The Church's Portraits of Jesus adds another voice to the ever-growing discussion about Jesus in recent media and scholarly conversations. While showing the unique portraits of Jesus offered by the four gospels-Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John-the book also establishes an approach to understanding the communities who shaped the portraits. As contemporary Christians explore their portraits of Jesus, Bridges provides excellent questions and guidance. This book is perfect for church, college and seminary classrooms that focus on the reading of the gospel narratives, theology, or interpretation approached. The Church's Portraits of Jesus is also an ideal book for Sunday School groups looking for study books or other small groups within the church.

"I could never myself believe in God, if it were not for the cross. . . . In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it?" With compelling honesty John Stott confronts readers with the centrality of the cross in God's redemption of our pain-filled world.

Can we see triumph in tragedy, victory in shame? Why should an object of Roman distaste and Jewish disgust be the emblem of our worship and the axiom of our faith? And what does it mean for us today?

From one of the foremost preachers and Christian leaders of his generation, The Cross of Christ is a classic, accessible, and compelling look at the work of Christ. At the cross Stott finds the majesty and love of God disclosed, the sin and bondage of the world exposed. More than a study of the atonement, this book brings Scripture into living dialogue with Christian theology and contemporary issues. What emerges is a pattern for Christian life and worship, hope and mission.

In honor of John Stott's one hundredth birthday, this centennial edition includes an updated foreword by Alister McGrath and a new timeline of Stott's life. A study guide equips individuals and groups to more deeply reflect on and apply the book's message.

FINALLY ALIVE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE ARE BORN AGAIN

When Jesus said to Nicodemus, 'You must be born again', the devout and learned religious leader was unsure what Jesus meant. It would seem nothing has changed. Today 'born again Christians' fill churches that are seen as ineffectual at best, and even characterised by the 'mosaic' generation as 'unchristian'.

The term 'born again' has been devalued both in society and in the church. Those claiming to be 'born again' live lives that are indistinguishable from those who don't; they sin the same, embrace injustice the same, covet the same, do almost everything the same.

Being 'born again' is now defined by what people say they believe. The New Testament however defines Christians very differently.

"When Jesus said to Nicodemus, "You must be born again" (John 3:7), he was not sharing interesting and unimportant information. He was leading him to eternal life... If he does that for you (or if he already has), then you are (or you will be) truly, invincibly, finally alive." John Piper

As Christians become more engaged with the reality of religious pluralism, many find themselves torn between two worthy goals: to be faithful to the lordship of Jesus Christ, and to be open generously to possible truths found in other religions. "The First and the Last" offers a constructive way forward, showing how Christian theology can bring these two goals together.

This is a challenging and important book. At stake in the current debate over religious pluralism is the issue, not only of evangelism and mission, but also of the Christian claim to the uniqueness of Jesus Christ. George Sumner leads readers through both the challenges and possibilities raised by this debate, and he outlines a distinctive new method for assessing from a Christian standpoint the claims and practices of neighboring faiths.

The crux of Sumnerbs approach is a position he calls bfinal primacy, b a position that (1) sets non-Christian religions in relation to the unique mediating role of Jesus Christ, and (2) relates their truth claims to the overall scheme of grace. Sumner shows the effectiveness of this position in practical terms, using final primacy as a frame of reference for a number of twentieth-century theologies, namely those of Barth, Rahner, and Pannenberg, and as a way of examining both Indian and African theologies against their respective backgrounds of Hinduism and tribal practices.

Additionally, the book serves as an excellent introduction to the history of interfaith thought. Sumner surveys the ways religious pluralism has been handled in the past, including its treatment in the Enlightenment period in the work of figures like Schleiermacher, Lessing, Smart, and Konstantine. Sumnerends his work by facing head on the difficult question of bdialogue.b Final primacy, he says, redefines the mean of dialogue even as it promotes it, and he tells how in most thought-provoking terms.

Both provocative and stimulating, "The First and the Last" provides valuable reading for anyone interested in theology, interfaith dialogue, and missions.

Christians generally recognize the need to live a holy, or sanctified, life. But they differ on what sanctification is and how it is achieved.

How does one achieve sanctification in this life? How much success in sanctification is possible? Is a crisis experience following one's conversion normal--or necessary? If so, what kind of experience, and how is it verified?

Five Views on Sanctification--part of the Counterpoints series--brings together in one easy-to-understand volume five major Protestant views on sanctification:

  • Wesleyan View - represented by Melvin E. Dieter
  • Reformed View - represented by Anthony A. Hoekema
  • Pentecostal View - represented by Stanley M. Horton
  • Keswick View - represented by J. Robertson McQuilkin
  • Augustinian-Dispensationalism View - represented by John F. Walvoord
  • Writing from a solid evangelical stance, each author describes and defends his own understanding of the doctrine sanctification and then responds to the views of the other authors.

The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.
