Long recognized for the quality of its translations, introductions, explanatory notes, and indexes, the Library of Christian Classics provides scholars and students with modern English translations of some of the most significant Christian theological texts in history. Through these works--each written prior to the end of the sixteenth century--contemporary readers are able to engage the ideas that have shaped Christian theology and the church through the centuries.

Latina Evangelicas A Theological Survey from the Margins

Latina Evangelicas A Theological Survey from the Margins

$23.00
Sale 35% off 1 item
Description: Latina Evangélicas: A Theological Survey from the Margins is a constructive and postcolonial examination of the theology of Protestant Latinas who reside in the United States. Written by three Latinas who have pastored and who teach in Latina/o communities, the book seeks to expand beyond Latina feminist and mujerista voices to include those whose perspectives have not yet been heard. It thus introduces an important theological perspective to a wider audience, and provides an important resource that has been lacking for evangelicas/os and other marginalized groups who study in various theological programs. Key terminology, such as evangélica, is defined throughout, and a glossary is included for non-Spanish-speaking readers. Each chapter considers theological themes important to the Latina Protestant worshiping community, beginning with a constructive discussion of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit and followed by the doctrines of salvation and Jesus Christ, the Trinity, the church, Scripture, and ""the last things"" (eschatology). Given that one of the characteristics of Latina/o theologies is their dialogical and collaborative nature, the book concludes with a conversation among the three authors about the theological thinking that took place in its composition. Study questions are included at the end of each chapter. Endorsements: ""A groundbreaking book destined to shape Latina theology for years to come. Rooted in praxis and community, the authors are prompted by the transformative power of the subversive Spirit. I highly recommend it."" --Kwok Pui-lan, Professor of Christian Theology and Spirituality, Episcopal Divinity School ""Latina Evangelicas is a powerful and provocative treatise by three Latina theologian-practitioners. Here we have rich and prophetic voices that go beyond Latina feminist, mujerista, or womanist works. The traditional theological themes addressed in this book may seem common to some, but watch out! In the hands of these Latina theologians, these themes--be they the Holy Spirit, salvation, the Trinity, or Scripture--are insightful, constructive, and explosive."" --Eldin Villafane, Professor of Christian Social Ethics, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary ""A welcome and necessary addition to the theological table, and in particular to la mesa latina. This labor of love is a spirited and spirit-filled example of teología en conjunto. These three authors, Latinas evangélicas, rooted in the richness and diversity of their daily places and communities, expand theological vocabulary and offer fresh perspectives on traditional systematic themes by drawing on lived experience latinamente."" --Carmen Nanko-Fernández, Associate Professor of Pastoral Ministry, Catholic Theological Union About the Contributor(s): Loida I. As Christianity's center of gravity has shifted to the Majority World in the twenty-first century, many younger churches in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are now coming of age. With this maturing comes the ability to theologize for themselves, not simply to mimic what they have been taught from the West. As theology is an attempt to articulate through human language and culture and contexts the timeless truths of the eternal and transcendent God, Majority World churches have much to offer the West and the world, as they contribute to a greater understanding of the Lord. Here is a collection of chapters exhibiting local theologizing from around the world, not just from the "big three" non-Western continents but also including the Middle East and indigenous North America.

    NEXT CHRISTENDOM REVISED

    NEXT CHRISTENDOM REVISED
    $28.99
In this new and substantially expanded Third Edition, Philip Jenkins continues to illuminate the remarkable expansion of Christianity in the global South--in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Drawing upon the extensive new scholarship that has appeared on this topic in recent years, he asks how the new Christianity is likely to affect the poor, among whom it finds its most devoted adherents. How should we interpret the enormous success of prosperity churches across the Global South? Politically, what will be the impact of new Christian movements? Will Christianity contribute to liberating the poor, to give voices to the previously silent, or does it threaten only to bring new kinds of division and conflict? Does Christianity liberate women, or introduce new scriptural bases for subjection?

Acclaim for previous editions of The Next Christendom:

Named one of the Top Religion Books of 2002 by USA Today

Named One of the Top Ten Religion Books of the Year by Booklist (2002)

Winner of the Christianity Today Book Award in the category of "Christianity and Culture" (2002)

"Jenkins is to be commended for reminding us, throughout the often gripping pages of this lively work...that the history of Christianity is the history of innovative--and unpredictable--adaptations."
--The New York Times Book Review

"This is a landmark book. Jenkin's thesis is comprehensively researched; his analysis is full of insight; and his projection of the future may indeed prove to be prophetic."
    --Baptist Times

"A valuable and provocative look at the phenomenon widely ignored in the affluent North but likely to be of enormous importance in the century ahead.... The Next Christendom is chillingly realistic about the relationship between Christianity and Islam."
    --Russell Shaw, Crisis

"If the times demand nothing less than a major rethinking of contemporary global history from a Christian perspective, The Next Christendom will be one of the significant landmarks pointing the way."
    --Mark Noll, Books & Culture

"The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD marked the beginning of a new era in Christianity. For the first time, doctrines were organized into a single creed. The Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers did most of their writing during and after this important event in Church history. Unlike the previous era of Christian writing, the Nicene and Post-Nicene era is dominated by a few very important and prolific writers. In Volume V of the 14-volume collected writings of the Nicenes and Post-Nicenes (first published between 1886 and 1889), readers will discover Saint Augustines rebuke of Pelagianism. This doctrine undermined Augustines beliefs because it claimed that original sin did not exist. Since there was no original sin, humans were saved or lost based solely on their own will. This further meant that Jesus, while a great teacher and model human being, did not die to save humanity, negating a large portion of Christian doctrine. Augustine believed that salvation was available only by the grace of God working in conjunction with mans decision to live a good life. Spiritual seekers and students of history will find this work a thorough defense of Catholic theology."
